Darfur Peace & Development Organization Presentation
The Mission: to provide humanitarian relief to victims of the genocide in Darfur, to facilitate just governance, and to enable Darfurians to effectively rebuild and develop their homeland.
The Project: Darfur Peace & Development Organization (DPDO) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to a peaceful Darfur that is justly governed and developed in a sustainable manner. DpDo will use DFW's gift to support their work in the Darfur Women’s Center, assisting women to generate income for their households.
Why We Love this Program: In 2007, DPDO established the Women’s Center in Kassab camp to provide a safe place where displaced women can connect with one another and receive the resources they need to begin rebuilding their lives. The women live in camps where “home” is a hovel with a plastic tarp roof, where the tasks of finding food, water and firewood consume many hours of their days. The Darfur Women’s Center depends on the generous support of concerned women, as programs supporting Darfuri women’s needs are under-funded. DPDO’s program offers a direct supportive link between donors and displaced women. DPDO: “We believe the model we have developed is both effective and sustainable since it develops the women’s ability to manage their own center and its services.”
